For example, The Great Wall requires you to have a settlement on one of the brown squares by the desert. Each monument has specific requirements to be built. The draw to this scenario is that you can build one of the five wonders to achieve victory. You need to probably keep the map the way it is designed for balance reasons. My two favorite scenarios are The Foggy Island and The Wonders of Catan. Some of the scenarios come with special rules. The booklet might say to put a mountain there with a 6 on it but we might put a forest with a 3 instead. My groups like to use these scenarios but randomize the type of terrain hexes. #Seafearers of catan how toThey tell you how to set up the map and where to place the hexes, harbors, and tokens. The other major thing that this expansion brings is the scenarios in the rules booklet. The islands are a really cool concept and a good way to shake up the game. It completely changes the dynamic and adds more complexity because now you have to worry about making ships as well to spread out. The major appeal is the large map, which is a HUGE change. Seafarers doesn’t seem too add that many things. It will make this one feel better with the additional ways to get resources or powers to make up for the resources you don’t get. Gold is a very powerful hex.įirst off, if you haven’t gotten the green box (Catan Cities and Knights) I suggest getting that one first. One turn you can say its a forest and get wood and next turn it is a hills and gives you brick. When you get resources from it, you can pretend it is a terrain of your choosing. There be gold in them hills, or at least the island across the sea. The pirate ship is just a black ship that is used in some of the scenarios. Now they can be placed along any water edge on any island. These replace the harbors that where on the edge of the original map. They may represent special VP or some other condition. These are little tokens used for the scenarios that are included in the rules. They will add to longest road if connected to a road through a city or settlement. They act EXACTLY the same as roads except they can and ONLY can be built on the edge of a sea hex. How are you going to traverse from land mass to land mass? You can’t just use roads. The addition of sea hexes allows for islands to form. The map size is shown in the image above. It adds 19 sea hexes, 11 terrain hexes, and 6 frame pieces to fit it all inside. (In particular, older editions of Settlers did not come with a frame for their board a separate add-on was made available for players of the older-edition Settlers games, containing the newer edition frames, so as to make them compatible with the newer edition of Seafarers the older edition of Seafarers included a square frame, and while both older and newer editions of the frames have the same width across, the newer edition is not square-shaped, and is longer down the middle of the board compared to the sides. The main appeal to this expansion is the much larger maps to play on. The scenarios between the older editions of Seafarers and the newest are generally incompatible, knowing the different frames included with the game. Seafarers provides scenarios for four players (the older third edition had separate maps for three- and four-player versions of the scenarios), while the extension provides scenarios for six players (the older third edition also included separate maps for five- and six-player scenarios). Other attributes also set each map apart, for example, restrictions on the placement of initial settlements, whether tiles are distributed randomly, the number of victory points needed to win, and special victory point awards, usually for building on islands across the sea. Each map uses a different selection of tiles laid out in a specific pattern, which may not use all of the tiles. Unlike The Settlers of Catan and Cities & Knights of Catan, in which the only random element of setup is the placement of land tiles, number tokens, and harbors in an identically-shaped playing area, Seafarers of Catan has a number of different scenarios or maps from which to choose.
